New York, New York was written for the Martin Scorcese film starring Robert Deniro and Liza
Minelli. It was written by the team of John Kander and Fred Ebb
(“Cabaret”) amoung other Broadway Classics. When I was a young actor just starting out in New York, this was the song that I used
as my audition song. I haven’t sung it in a long time. Recording it was like catching up with an old friend that you haven’t seen in a very long time....
I have dreamed is from the Rogers and Hammerstein classic"The King and I."
This is one of my all-time favorite ballads. Like most R&H theater
songs, it has a very simple lyric and an extraordinarily beautiful
melody. This song is such a pleasure to sing.
Cool, Maria/I Have A Love/Somewhere - When I was 21 years old, I dyed my hair blond to play Tony in “West Side Story”. It was an experience I
will never forget. I had to be blond because with my Italian
background, I looked more Puerto Rican than any of the other actors -- which was a problem if you’re
supposed to play Tony (who is Polish by heritage) With the exception of
Maria, the rest of these songs, were sung by other characters in the musical.
However, I have always wanted to record these songs, and now I finally
have.
Der letzte Tanz and Ich gehör nur mir from "Elisabeth"
- Sylvester Levay and Michael Kunze created one of the must beautiful musicals
written in the last 20 years. These are my two favorite songs from that
marvelous show.
Luck be a Lady from "Guys and Dolls" This is simply a
perfect theater song and fully captures the brassy Broadway sound of the
late 40’s and early 50’s.
Gethsemane is from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic --"Jesus Christ
Superstar." I’ve always wanted to play Jesus and one of the reasons is this
marvellous song that Jesus sings before his crucifixion.
Sweet Transvestite - Tim Curry was so brilliant in "Rocky Horror" that I
would never dare to play this part onstage. I simply feel it can never be done better
than he did it. However, I love this song and wanted to include it on this CD.
Memory from Webber’s “Cats” has probably been recorded more than any song except
White Christmas. Add mine to the list....
The Music of the Night and the title song from The"Phantom of the Opera" are two of the best melodies ever written for the musical
stage. Like Memory from “Cats” they worm their way into your ears and then finally your
heart.
I dreamed a dream from “Les Miserables” This show has been a hit all over the
world. “ I dreamed a dream is sung by the character
Fantine, who dies shortly after she sings this song. Although I love this
melody, I have always found the lyrics were very depressing. So I have taken the liberty
of rewriting them to more reflect my viewpoint on the world.
The Circle of Life is one of a number of marvellous songs that Elton John wrote for the animated film
"The Lion King" As is today’s practice, this blockbuster film was turned into a brilliant stage
show. I’ve long been a fan of Elton John, and I think his work on the Lion King is about as brilliant
as he has ever been.
